Catherine Owens is a visual artist and photographer living in Boston, MA. She holds a bachelors degree in exercise physiology, and masters degrees in nutrition science and sustainable agriculture. Her art journey began in chalk, while working in the restaurant industry in 2012. After months of maintaining the chalkboards of the restaurants she worked in, she hung out her shingle as Chalk & Ink and has since been drawing murals in homes, restaurants, bars, and businesses across the Boston area.
The ephemerality of chalk as a medium influenced the development of her artistic style, which evokes the grace of movement in the natural world, in painstaking detail.
In 2018 she began working in more precise media, beginning with pen & ink in an ongoing series of botanical drawings, Plants in the Moonlight. The series uses stippled white ink on black paper, and is an homage to the plants that have been used & revered for centuries as natural dyes.
In 2020 she began painting with natural pigment watercolor, and in 2023, debuted her first collection of mixed-media paintings, What She Didn’t Say, while living in the greatest city in the world, New Orleans.
