What She Didn’t Say

2021-2023, Watercolor & mixed media

What She Didn't Say is an allegory for moments of connection that never materialized during covid masking: a sympathetic grin for a parent whose toddler is melting down, an encouraging smile to a runner huffing their way up a hill, an open-mouthed ‘gahh!’ to soften a cart collision at the grocery store. We say that eyes are the window to our soul, but I believe the seat of humanity is found in our most expressive feature: the mouth.

With two exceptions, each of the mouths in this collection is small, 2” x 2”, and framed as a triptych around a particular theme—grit, disdain, humiliation, etc. For most of the pieces, I’ve made custom shadowboxes and three-dimensional accoutrements in a variety of media (textiles, epoxy resin, plaster cast, gold leaf, faux pearls, etc.).
